Lyoto Machida was born in Belem, Brazil. The third son to Shotokan karate master Yoshizo Machida. Lyoto began training in karate at the age of three, and later studied sumo wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His father is very closely connected to Shotokan founder Gichin Funakoshi and the influence on Lyoto is instantly apparent. While in college Lyoto was introduced to Japanese wrestling legend Antonio Inoki who took Lyoto under his wing and began advancing his training.
